MATT HUGGED BOB AFTER the game was over. He didn't want to do it in the kitchen in front of Amy. Then he went to say goodnight to Ana, who was having tea with Amy. He bent to kiss Ana on the cheek and was relieved to see Amy's approval. “Thank you both for dinner.”

“You're welcome, dear.”

He wanted to kiss Amy too, whether it was on the cheek or her lips but he didn't think she would be good with that yet. So he set his hand on her shoulder and said goodnight. As he drove home, he wondered how long he should wait before he said anything to Amy about his feelings or if he should say anything at all. She was still vulnerable after the assault and emotionally raw.

This emotion stuff was new to him. He was a by-the-book cop. He was a fact finder. He was practical. He had never had a long term relationship with a woman. Sure, he had dated. He'd had one night stands but forgotten them the next day. But this was the woman he could not, would not get out of his head.

“God, please help her.” He wasn't sure where that came from but he did know he wanted God to heal Amy so that she could get back to herself. And maybe one day accept him in her life.

AMY

By the end of the week, I felt slightly stronger and was able to walk to the trees and back in the afternoon. Sometimes my Dad went with me and sometimes it was just me. One day I was making my loop and suddenly I heard a rustling in the bushes just beyond the trees. I jumped back a step and walked as fast as I could back to the house.

It was frustrating. I wanted so badly to get back to my previous strength. I wanted to feel whole again. But I still felt weak and queasy in the mornings. I took a nap after my daily walk, was in bed by nine every night, and didn't get out of bed until ten.
